October is National Energy Awareness Month! It's a great time of year to pay attention to your energy use and see if there is anything you can do to be more efficient. Here are five tips to make sure you are maintaining an energy-efficient, money-saving home.

1. Look it over.

Take a look at your bills for the last year. What months are higher? This will give you an idea of where you can cut back going forward, or even if there is a problem that is causing you to spend extra energy money.

2. Get out of hot water.

Did you know water heating is the second biggest energy user in your home? Luckily, there are ways to reduce your usage. Two easy options are reducing the temperature setting and enrolling in your local electric co-op's load management program.

3. Stop the leaks.

Another one of the biggest energy inefficiency culprits is leaks. Poorly sealed walls, windows, doors, outlets and especially ductwork can cost you hundreds of dollars a year in wasted energy. Caulking, stripping, sealing and insulating is well worth your time and money.

4. Do the math.

This is simple. Every degree you adjust your thermostat translates into savings. In fact, you can save up to 20% on heating and cooling just by adjusting the temperature when you are gone or sleeping. The best way to do this? A programmable thermostat.
